Who Told You That You Can’t Rest?

“And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”Mark 6:31 (KJV)

When a nine-to-five ends, the work usually stays at the office. If you run your own thing, there is no such line. The phone is the office, and it is always in your pocket.

So ask yourself an honest question. Who is standing over your shoulder telling you that you can’t rest? A client? A competitor? A voice from childhood? Or just a fear that everything falls apart if you stop?

Jesus saw his disciples worn out by the crowds. “And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” The needs were real. He still called them away.

If the Son of God built rest into the busiest season of his ministry, the voice telling you rest is irresponsible isn’t his. Do you trust that voice, or your Creator? Step away for a while this week. The work will still be there.

Read it yourself

Read Mark 6:30–34. What happened right after Jesus called them to rest, and how did he respond?

Reflect

Whose voice is telling you that you can’t rest?

Pray

Lord, you call me to come apart and rest a while. Help me trust you more than the pressure. Amen.
