Who Am I Without This?
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”Psalm 127:1 (KJV)
Sometimes it takes a scare to ask the real question. A health crisis, a business that falls apart, an injury that ends the thing you were known for. The first question is usually “What will I do now?” The deeper one is “Who am I without this?”
If your work is who you are, losing it feels like losing yourself. That is a heavy thing to hang on a job, and no job can carry it. “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
Paul gives believers a different answer to the question: “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Your life, the real one, is kept somewhere no market crash or injury can reach. Work is something you do. It isn’t who you are.
That doesn’t make work unimportant. It frees you to do it well, without the fear that everything you are rides on it.
Read it yourself
Read Colossians 3:1–4. Where does Paul say our life is, and when will it appear?
If your job ended tomorrow, how would you answer the question “Who am I?”
Lord, my life is hid with Christ in you. Let me work hard, but rest my identity in you alone. Amen.
