When Hustle Feels Like Faithfulness

“Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.”Proverbs 19:2 (KJV)

There is a kind of busyness that feels holy. You are working hard, building something good, staying up late for it. Surely God is pleased with all that effort. And maybe he is. But it is worth asking why you are running so fast.

Proverbs has a short line that slows us down: “he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.” Speed itself isn’t the problem. Running ahead of God is. Haste can be a sign that we have started trusting our own pace more than his direction.

The better way is in a familiar verse: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Acknowledging him in all our ways includes our work, our goals and our timelines.

So ask the honest question. What is the reason behind what I am building? God’s glory, or my own name? The answer may not change your hours, but it will change your heart.

Read it yourself

Read Proverbs 3:1–8. What does Solomon promise to those who trust the LORD and depart from evil?

Reflect

Is there an area of your work where you are running ahead of God?

Pray

Lord, I acknowledge you in my work. Slow me down where I’m rushing ahead of you, and direct my paths. Amen.
