Unto Us a Child Is Born
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”Isaiah 9:2 (KJV)
Isaiah wrote to people living in dark times. “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” Then he told them why.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Centuries later, an angel told shepherds the same news. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Unto us. Unto you. This was a gift with your name on it.
Read those names slowly today. Wonderful. Counsellor. The mighty God. The everlasting Father. The Prince of Peace. They are all one child. Merry Christmas. The King you were promised has come, and “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.”
Read it yourself
Read Isaiah 9:1–7 and Luke 2:8–14. Write down every name and title given to the child in both passages.
Which of the names in Isaiah 9:6 do you most need him to be for you this year?
Wonderful, Counsellor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace: thank you for coming to us. Merry Christmas, Lord Jesus. Amen.
