Too Heavy for Thee
“And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.”Exodus 18:17–18 (KJV)
Moses sat from morning to evening judging every dispute among the people. He was doing good work, important work. And his father-in-law watched and said, “The thing that thou doest is not good.”
Then he explained why: “Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.” Jethro told him to set up capable leaders and share the load.
Sometimes redeeming the time is an operations question. Paul says, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,” and then, “Redeeming the time.” Wisdom can look like a simple system, a checklist, or handing a task to someone else.
If you are drowning in details that keep you from your family and from God, it may not be a spiritual failure. It may be a structure problem. Ask who could help carry it, and what you could stop doing alone.
Read it yourself
Read Exodus 18:13–27. What kind of people did Jethro tell Moses to choose?
What are you carrying alone that is too heavy for you?
Lord, give me wisdom to share the load and redeem the time, so I have room for what matters most. Amen.
