The Year in the Ledger
“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
We started this year at the beginning, with two books that start the same way: “In the beginning.” Since then we’ve walked through a lot of the ledger. Love that keeps its word. The cross. The empty tomb. Work and rest. Courage, stewardship and thankfulness. And this month, the King who was promised.
Look back over your own year. There were probably days you met God in his word and days you didn’t open it. Prayers answered and prayers still waiting. Some of the counting was easy. Some of it hurt.
Here is the one count that never changes. “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Every morning this year, there was new mercy. Every single one.
Tomorrow the ledger turns a page. You don’t start the new year on your own record. You start it on his faithfulness. Count on it.
Read it yourself
Read Lamentations 3:21–26. What does the writer call to mind that gives him hope?
Where did you see God’s faithfulness this year? Write down three places.
Faithful God, your mercies were new every morning this year. Thank you. I begin the new year counting on you. Amen.
