The Table, Not the Vacation
“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”Deuteronomy 6:7 (KJV)
It is easy to think we can make up for lost time with a big gesture. A week at the beach after a year of long hours. An expensive gift after missing the game. Kids rarely remember it that way. They remember who was at the table.
God told Israel to pass on his word in the most ordinary places: “thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Faith was passed on at the table, on the road and at bedtime.
Those moments can’t be saved up and spent all at once. They are daily. And they go by fast. “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Your family probably doesn’t need a bigger trip. They need you, present, on an ordinary Tuesday.
Read it yourself
Read Deuteronomy 6:4–9. List every place and time where God says to talk about his words.
Which ordinary moment with your family could you protect this week?
Father, help me be present in the small moments. Let my children see you in me at the table, on the road and at bedtime. Amen.
