The Sign of the Prophet Jonas

“Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”Jonah 1:17 (KJV)

People asked Jesus for a sign. He gave them one from an old story. “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

Jonah’s story says the same thing in its own words: “Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” What looked like the end of Jonah turned out to be his way back.

Jesus pointed to that number before he ever went to the cross. He knew how long he would be in the grave, and he knew he would come out. On the morning the women came looking for him, the angel said, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.”

As he said. Every word Jesus spoke about his death and resurrection came true. If he kept his word about that, he will keep his word about everything else he has promised you.

“three days and three nights” in the fish (Jonah 1:17), and the same in the sign Jesus named (Matthew 12:40).

What promise of Jesus do you find hardest to believe right now?

Pray

Risen Lord, you rose as you said. Help me trust every word you’ve spoken. Amen.
