The Seed of the Woman

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”Genesis 3:15 (KJV)

The first promise of a Saviour comes in the worst moment in the Bible. Adam and Eve have just fallen. And God says to the serpent: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

A wounded heel and a crushed head. The serpent would hurt the coming one. The coming one would destroy the serpent. Thousands of years later Paul wrote, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman.” The seed had come.

The story isn’t over. Paul promised believers, “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.” The victory won at the cross will be finished.

Tomorrow is December, the month we remember his coming. Start here, in Genesis 3, where God first promised it. The Christmas story begins on the day of the fall.

Count it yourself

“heel” appears 2 times in Genesis (3:15 and 25:26).

Reflect

What does it mean to you that God promised a Saviour on the very day sin entered the world?

Pray

Lord, from the beginning you promised a Saviour. Thank you for sending your Son, and for the victory that is coming. Amen.
