The Last Time You Won’t Know
“It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.”Ecclesiastes 7:2 (KJV)
There will be a last time your child climbs into your bed in the morning. A last time they ask you to carry them, a last bedtime story. You won’t know it is the last time when it happens. It will just be an ordinary day.
That can sound sad, but Scripture says it is wisdom. “It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.” Remembering that life ends helps us live it.
Moses prayed, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Numbering our days doesn’t mean worrying about them. It means noticing them, and not letting them slip by while we are somewhere else in our heads.
Today might be an ordinary day. Be there for it.

Lord, teach me to number my days. Help me be present with the people you’ve given me today. Amen.
