The Kid in the Dirt

Watch a small child play in the dirt. They can sit there for an hour, completely content, with no sense that they should be doing something more productive. Then watch an adult try to sit still for two minutes. The hand reaches for the phone. The mind starts listing tasks.

What changed? Somewhere along the way many of us started believing that everything depends on us. If we stop, it all falls apart.

James gently corrects that. “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain.” Instead, he says, “ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

God holds the world together. You don’t. That frees you to work hard without carrying what was never yours. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Try it today, even for a few minutes, like a kid in the dirt.
