The Friends Your Stuff Attracts
“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”Luke 12:15 (KJV)
Proverbs doesn’t sugarcoat how people work. “The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends.” Money draws a crowd. But a crowd drawn by what you have isn’t the same as people who love who you are.
Sometimes we chase impressive things hoping they will bring connection: the nicer house, the better car, the right look. They might bring attention. They rarely bring the kind of friendship that sticks around when the stuff is gone.
Jesus said, “Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Your life isn’t measured by your things, and neither are your relationships.
Proverbs also says, “there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” That kind of friend is found by being one. This month, when the pressure to spend and impress gets loud, invest in people instead of appearances.
Read it yourself
Read Luke 12:13–21. What did the rich man plan to do with his goods, and what did God call him?
Is there something you want to buy mostly because of how it would make others see you?
Lord, my life isn’t in my possessions. Help me love people more than appearances, and be a true friend. Amen.
