The Cup He Chose

“But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”Matthew 26:29 (KJV)

At the last supper Jesus passed the cup to his disciples and said something they wouldn’t have understood yet. “But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

That same night, in the garden, there was another cup. “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” This was the cup of suffering, the cup of judgment for sin.

When the soldiers came and Peter drew his sword, Jesus stopped him. “Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?” He set down the cup of celebration and picked up the cup of wrath.

He drank the cup we should have drunk, so that one day we can drink the new cup with him in his Father’s kingdom. Every time you take communion, remember both cups.

Read it yourself

Read Luke 22:14–20. What does Jesus call the cup after supper?

Reflect

What does it mean to you that Jesus chose to drink the cup the Father gave him?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you drank the cup of wrath for me. Thank you. I look forward to the day I drink the new cup with you. Amen.
