The Buried Talent
“And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.”Matthew 25:25 (KJV)
Many believers feel they have to apologise before admitting they are good at something. Oh, it’s nothing. Anyone could do it. It sounds humble. Sometimes it is fear wearing humility’s clothes.
In Jesus’ parable, one servant took what his master gave him and buried it. “And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.” He thought he was being careful. His master called him wicked and slothful.
If a gift is something God entrusted to you, then naming it plainly isn’t pride. It is stewardship. Peter says, “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” Gifts are given so they can be used for others.
So what are you good at? Say it out loud, and then thank God for it. Then ask how you can use it this week to serve someone.
Read it yourself
Read Matthew 25:14–30. What did the master say to the two servants who used their talents?
What gift have you been hiding or downplaying? Who could it serve?
Lord, everything I’m good at came from you. Help me stop burying it and start using it for others. Amen.
