The Armour David Took Off

“And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.”1 Samuel 17:5 (KJV)

The text gives us the weight of Goliath’s gear. “the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.” His “spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron.” It is written down so we would feel it. This was a heavy man in heavy armour.

Then Saul tried to solve the problem the same way. “And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.” If Goliath had armour, David needed armour too.

David tried it on and took it off. “I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.” He went out with what God had already taught him to use, and with a name: “I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts.”

We often try to fight like the giant: more weight, more armour, more of what the world trusts. Sometimes faith looks like taking something off. You don’t need to match the giant’s weight. You need the name of the LORD.

Count it yourself

Goliath’s coat weighed 5,000 shekels of brass (1 Samuel 17:5) and his spear’s head 600 shekels of iron (17:7).

Reflect

What “armour” are you relying on that God never asked you to wear?

Pray

LORD of hosts, I don’t want to fight in borrowed armour. Teach me to go out in your name. Amen.
