Ten Times Changed, Never Abandoned

“And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.”Genesis 31:5 (KJV)

Jacob worked for Laban for twenty years, and the deal kept moving. When he finally laid it out, the numbers tell the story: “I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.”

Ten times. Every time Jacob thought he knew where he stood, the terms changed. Many of us know what that feels like: a boss who moves the goalposts, a promise that keeps getting rewritten, a situation that never settles.

But listen to how Jacob describes those same years to his wives: “your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.” And again, “the God of my father hath been with me.” Laban changed. God didn’t.

If the ground under you keeps shifting, you are in good company. People will change the terms. God keeps his word. He was with Jacob in every one of those ten changes, and he is with you in yours.

Count it yourself

Laban changed Jacob’s wages 10 times (Genesis 31:7, 41), over 20 years in his house: 14 for the two daughters and 6 for the cattle (31:41).

Reflect

Where do the terms keep changing in your life right now? What would it mean to say with Jacob, “the God of my father hath been with me”?

Pray

Faithful God, people change the terms, but you never change. Be with me in every unfair season, as you were with Jacob. Amen.
