Strength Under Control
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”Matthew 11:29 (KJV)
We tend to think meek means weak. Someone who can’t stand up for themselves. But the Bible calls Moses meek: “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” This is the man who stood before Pharaoh and led a nation through the sea.
Jesus called himself meek too: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” He was never weak. He was strength completely surrendered to the Father.
Think of a strong horse with a bit in its mouth. James uses that picture: “we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.” The horse doesn’t lose its strength. It is brought under control.
Train your body to be strong. Then put that strength under God’s control. That is what meekness looks like.
Read it yourself
Read James 3:1–5. What part of the body does James compare to the bit in a horse’s mouth?
Where in your life is your strength, of body or will or personality, not yet under God’s control?
Lord, make me strong, and make me meek. Put every strength I have under your control. Amen.
