Sow in the Morning
“In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.”Ecclesiastes 11:6 (KJV)
Sowing is one of the Bible’s favourite pictures, and it fits work and the gospel equally well. You plant, you wait, and you don’t control the harvest.
Picture a new father who suddenly has fewer free hours than he used to. Instead of feeling guilty about working less, he sees the hours he has as a gift. He uses some of them for his family, and some to talk with his neighbours about Christ. He treats those conversations the way he treats work: worth showing up for, worth following up.
“In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that.” You don’t know which seed will grow, so you keep sowing.
And the promise is good: “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” Sow faithfully, in your work and in your witness, and leave the harvest to God.
Read it yourself
Read Ecclesiastes 11:1–6. What does Solomon say happens to the one who watches the wind?
Who is one person you could sow a gospel seed with this week?
Lord of the harvest, help me sow faithfully in my work and in my witness, and trust you with the results. Amen.
