Practice Can Wait
“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
Picture a dad doing his daily practice on the guitar. He has set a goal and he is keeping it. His little girl walks in and asks to sit with him. Without thinking, he says, wait a minute, I’m practising.
Then it hits him. He is spending a moment that will never come back on a skill he could practise any day. She won’t be this small, or ask like this, forever.
Goals are good. They help us grow. But they are supposed to shape who we become, not outrank the people we love. Scripture calls our children a gift: “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD.”
When the disciples tried to keep children away from Jesus, he was “much displeased,” and said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not.” Jesus had the most important work in the world, and he stopped for children. Your practice can wait.
Read it yourself
Read Mark 10:13–16. What did Jesus do with the children after he spoke to the disciples?
What good goal might be crowding out the people in your home?
Lord, help me see my children as your heritage. Let me never be too busy to welcome them. Amen.
