Out of Egypt
“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.”Hosea 11:1 (KJV)
Hosea looked back on Israel’s beginnings with tender words. “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.” It was a memory of the exodus, of God rescuing his people.
Then Matthew tells us about a young family running for their lives. Warned in a dream, Joseph took Mary and the child to Egypt, and stayed there “until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.”
Jesus walked the same road his people had walked. Down into Egypt, and back out again. He didn’t skip the hard parts of Israel’s story. He went through them, as the true Son.
That means there is no part of your story he can’t understand. He knows what it is to be a refugee, to be hunted, to wait in a foreign place. And he knows the way out.

Read Matthew 2:13–23. How many times does Joseph receive guidance in a dream in this passage?
What hard part of your story do you need to know that Jesus understands?
Lord Jesus, you walked the hard road too. Thank you that you understand me, and that you lead me out. Amen.
