Not by Might

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”Zechariah 4:6 (KJV)

Zerubbabel had a temple to rebuild and not nearly enough resources to do it. God sent him a message: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” The work would be finished, but not by human strength.

David said the same thing to a giant. Standing in front of Goliath with a sling, he said, “And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S.”

Paul carries that thread to every believer. After listing trouble, distress, persecution and danger, he writes, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”

Whatever you are building or fighting this month, your might and power are not the deciding factor. Do your part with everything you have. Then rest in this: the battle is the Lord’s.

Read it yourself

Read Zechariah 4:6–10. What did God say about the hands of Zerubbabel and the day of small things?

Reflect

Where are you trying to win by might and power alone?

Pray

Lord of hosts, not by might, nor by power, but by your Spirit. Fight my battles, and let me rest in you. Amen.
