Love on Purpose

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”1 John 3:18 (KJV)

Almost everyone wants a happy marriage. Saying so doesn’t change anything. Wanting a strong body doesn’t build muscle either. Something has to actually happen, on a real day, at a real time.

John is blunt about love: “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” Love that only lives in words and good intentions isn’t finished yet.

So get specific. Do you know what makes your spouse feel most loved? Is it time, help, words, touch, a thoughtful gift? If you don’t know, ask them. Then pick one small thing you can do every day and one bigger thing you can plan each week.

It may feel unromantic to put love on a plan. But most of the important things in life happen because someone decided ahead of time. Love on purpose, in deed and in truth.

Read it yourself

Read 1 John 3:16–18. What does John say is the way we know what love is?

Reflect

What is one deed of love you could do for your spouse, or someone close to you, every day this week?

Pray

Lord, I don’t want to love only in words. Show me how to love in deed and in truth, starting today. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
