Living for Them

“For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:”Ephesians 5:29 (KJV)

Plenty of people would say they would die for their family. That is a noble thought. A harder question is whether we are willing to live for them, in the everyday sense of taking care of the body God gave us.

Paul uses an ordinary fact to talk about marriage: “For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.” Caring for your body isn’t vanity. It is stewardship.

John greeted a friend with a simple prayer: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” He cared about both. Health of soul came first, but health of body mattered too.

This isn’t about chasing a look. It is about being present and able for the people who count on you. Walk, rest and eat well where you can, not to impress anyone, but so you can keep serving them for as long as God gives you.

Read it yourself

Read 3 John 1:1–4. What brought John the greatest joy?

Reflect

What is one small way you could care for your body this week for the sake of the people you love?

Pray

Lord, thank you for this body. Help me care for it well, so I can serve the people you’ve given me. Amen.
