Genesis Day One in a Human Heart
“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”2 Corinthians 4:6 (KJV)
The world began in the dark: “darkness was upon the face of the deep.” Then God spoke: “Let there be light: and there was light.” Nothing in the darkness made the light. God did.
Paul says that is exactly what happens when someone comes to Christ. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
Many believers can point to a day like that: years of anger, emptiness or rebellion, and then one conversation, one verse, one moment when the light came on. It is their Genesis day one. Others came to faith slowly, and can’t name the day. Either way, the light came from God, not from us.
If you know someone who seems too far gone, remember how the world started. God has always been good at speaking light into the dark.
Read it yourself
Read 2 Corinthians 4:3–7. What does Paul call the light God shines in our hearts, and where is it seen?
When did the light come on for you? Who might need you to tell them that story?
God of light, thank you for shining in my heart. Shine in the hearts of the people I love who are still in the dark. Amen.
