Deposits Before the Storm
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (KJV)
Every marriage goes through hard seasons: a sick child, a lost job, a stretch at work that takes everything. The couples who come through them well usually didn’t start strong in the storm. They started strong months before it.
Small, ordinary time together works like deposits into an account. A walk after dinner, an evening out, a real conversation with the phones put away. None of it feels important on the day. But when the hard season comes, there is something to draw on.
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth.” You can be married and still feel alone in a hard season, if nothing has been put in the account for a long time.
So make a deposit this week. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be on purpose.
Read it yourself
Read Ecclesiastes 4:9–12. What three pictures does Solomon use to show that two are better than one?
What is one small deposit you could make in your marriage, or in a close friendship, this week?
Lord, thank you for the people you’ve given me. Help me invest in them before the hard days come. Amen.
