Better Blood Than Abel
“And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.”Genesis 4:10 (KJV)
After Cain killed his brother, God confronted him with a terrible sentence: “What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.” Abel’s blood had a voice, and it was crying for justice.
Hebrews picks up that voice thousands of years later. It tells believers they have come “to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”
Both bloods speak. Abel’s cried out against his brother. Christ’s speaks for his brothers and sisters. Abel’s asked for judgment. Christ’s brings forgiveness. One was shed by a murderer. The other was given willingly, for the very people who put him on the cross.
On the days your own guilt seems to cry out against you, remember there is a better voice. The blood of Jesus is speaking for you, and it says better things.
Read it yourself
Read Hebrews 12:18–24. List the things the writer says believers have come to.
Which voice have you been listening to lately, the one that accuses you or the one that speaks better things?
Lord Jesus, thank you that your blood speaks for me. Let me hear it louder than every accusation. Amen.
